I. Introduction

Sometimes the most important work begins with a conversation.

For more than a decade, I served as a police officer in British Columbia. During those years, I responded to countless calls involving intimate partner violence. I witnessed the fear, the complexity, and the devastating impact it had on individuals, families, children, and communities.

Like many people, I believed I understood this issue.

Then someone close to me quietly shared her own experience.

She was intelligent.
Successful.
Compassionate.
Strong.

She was someone you would never expect.

Despite everything I had seen professionally, I realized just how much remained hidden — and how many people quietly carry this burden every day.

That conversation changed me. It also became the beginning of Project Beacon.

II. Why Workplaces?

Intimate partner violence doesn't remain at home.

It follows people into every part of their lives — including work. The workplace may become the safest place someone visits each day.

A coworker may be the first person to notice something has changed. A manager may become the first person someone chooses to trust. Those moments matter.

Yet many organizations have never been taught how to recognize the signs or respond with confidence. Project Beacon was created to help change that.

III. Professional Background

Experience you can trust.

My policing career spanned more than eleven years across a variety of investigative and operational roles.

  1. Frontline General Duty Policing
  2. Domestic Violence Investigations
  3. Organized Crime
  4. Economic Crime
  5. Investigative Support
  6. Community Policing

Throughout my career, I learned that intimate partner violence affects every profession, every income level, every neighbourhood, and every community. It often remains hidden until someone feels safe enough to tell another person.

Today, my work focuses on helping workplaces become ready for that moment.

IV. Our Approach

Education should create confidence — not fear.

Project Beacon is built on one simple belief: people don't need to become experts in intimate partner violence.

They simply need the confidence to recognize when something may be wrong, respond with compassion, and connect someone with the right support.

Our goal is never to create fear. Our goal is to create confidence. When workplaces know what to do, they become safer for everyone.

V. Mission, Vision & Values

Our Vision

A future where every workplace has the confidence to recognize intimate partner violence and respond with compassion, clarity, and practical action.
